Traction comes first
On a pool deck, a high-gloss film can feel slick underfoot when it is wet.
Many installers either choose a penetrating sealer that leaves the surface texture alone or broadcast a non-slip additive into the final coat.
If kids or older family members use the pool, say so in the form so the company can recommend a finish with that in mind.
Chlorine and saltwater pools
Splashed pool water dries and leaves chlorine or salt residue on the paver surface and in the joints.
Over time salt crystals forming inside porous material can cause surface flaking, which is one reason sealing is often suggested around saltwater pools.
Rinsing the deck with fresh water now and then helps whatever sealer you choose last longer.
Screen enclosures and shade
Pool cages keep leaves out but also trap humidity and shade the deck, which is where mildew and algae get a foothold.
A thorough clean and a mildewcide-compatible sealer can slow regrowth, though shaded decks still need routine cleaning.
Tell the crew about access through the cage door and where equipment can be staged.
Questions
Can a pool deck be sealed while the pool is in use?
The deck must stay dry and off-limits while the sealer cures, so plan for the pool area to be closed for at least a day. The installer will give exact timing for the product.
Will sealer get into the pool water?
Careful crews mask the coping edge and avoid overspray into the pool. Ask how they protect the water and tile line.
